When winter brings cold weather and grey skies to much of Europe and Russia, many travelers look for warm beach destinations. However, popular resorts often come with crowds, inflated prices, and heavy commercialization. This is where Con Dao, located in Vietnam, stands out as a rare alternative.

Con Dao is frequently described as Vietnam’s most “untouched” beach resort — and not without reason. The archipelago consists of 16 islands, only a few of which are inhabited. Strict government regulations limit construction, preventing the rise of high-rise hotels seen in destinations like Nha Trang or Phu Quoc. Instead, visitors find small resorts and bungalows surrounded by lush greenery.

Another defining feature is minimal beach commercialization. There are no aggressive vendors, loud jet skis, or crowded promenades. Tourism is carefully controlled: Con Dao has just one airport, with a limited number of flights. During the peak season from November to April, the islands receive only around 5,000–7,000 visitors per month — exceptionally low by Southeast Asian standards.

This calm atmosphere surprises many travelers. Reviews often highlight how different Con Dao feels compared to the rest of Vietnam. Winter temperatures range between 25–28°C, while sea temperatures stay at a comfortable 24–26°C, making it ideal for relaxed swimming and sunbathing.

Con Dao’s history and natural environment add to its appeal. Once a prison complex during wartime, the area is now a national park. More than 80% of the territory is protected, home to sea turtles, rare birds, and untouched marine ecosystems. This conservation status explains why the islands have avoided mass tourism development.

The main drawback is accessibility. Flights from Europe or Russia usually require a transfer in Ho Chi Minh City, with total travel time reaching 12–15 hours. Yet prices remain reasonable: winter flights start around €500, and bungalow accommodation can be found from €30 per night. For travelers seeking an authentic, peaceful beach escape without luxury price tags, Con Dao remains one of Vietnam’s best-kept secrets.
