Customs officers at Zhukovsky Airport discovered a prohibited plant-based substance in a passenger’s luggage, authorities reported. The woman arrived on a flight from Dushanbe.

During a baggage inspection, officers found dried plant material scattered across the bottom of the suitcase. According to the passenger, she had brought the plant as a talisman “to protect against the evil eye” and was unaware that it was prohibited.

A laboratory examination determined that the plant contained harmala, a substance classified as psychotropic. The total weight of the seized material was 8.71 grams.

A criminal case has been opened under charges related to the smuggling of psychotropic substances. Investigative authorities are currently handling the case.

Customs officials emphasized that importing substances containing psychotropic components is prohibited regardless of the intended use. Items carried for traditional, cultural, or personal purposes may still fall under criminal liability if they contain banned substances.

Travelers are advised to carefully review customs regulations before crossing borders, particularly when carrying medications, plant materials, or powdered substances, as such items are subject to enhanced inspection.
